How Can Vestibular Physiotherapy Help With Dizziness, Vertigo or Balance?
At Restore Function Physiotherapy, our vestibular physiotherapist is specially trained in advanced assessment techniques to accurately diagnose the cause of dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders. A tailored treatment plan is developed and prescribed targeted exercises designed to reduce your symptoms, improve balance & stability and restore your confidence in everyday activities.
Whether your symptoms stem from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular hypofunction or another inner ear condition, vestibular physiotherapy provides an effective, evidence-based approach to recovery.
What is the Vestibular System?
- The vestibular system is located in your inner ear and contributes to your balance, head position and spatial awareness. It contains two main components:
- Semicircular Canals: There are 3 semicircular canals in your vestibular system which detect rotational movements of your head
- Otoliths: These detect acceleration
- These components send signals to your brain which help to keep your vision stable during head movements and maintain balance.
Common Vestibular Symptoms Include:
- Dizziness or Vertigo
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Reduced balance which may be associated with falls
- Vision or hearing disturbances
Common Vestibular Conditions:
- There are many conditions that can cause the vestibular symptoms. Some of the more common vestibular conditions include:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Vestibular Neuritis
- Acoustic Neuroma
- Meniere’s
- Vestibular Migraine
- Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
